Mold Detection Using qPCR DNA-Based Technology

Air Sampling
We use 3-piece PCR cassettes with polycarbonate filters to collect airborne fungal spores. This method is optimal for:

Surface and Swab Sampling
Swabs collected from hard-to-reach or moist areas are analyzed via qPCR for both fungi and bacteria. Ideal for:

Dust & ERMI Testing
AEMTEK offers full Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) panel testing using the EPA-developed MSQPCR method. ERMI is a powerful tool for:
- Evaluating long-term mold burden
- Assessing mold exposure history
- Supporting health-related investigations (e.g., asthma, allergies)
Bulk Material Testing
Building materials such as drywall, duct liner, and insulation can be tested using qPCR to determine the presence of fungal DNA—especially when viable cultures are difficult to obtain.
What is ERMI?
The Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) uses qPCR to quantify 36 fungal species in dust samples—26 species linked to water damage and 10 background species. The resulting ERMI score indicates a property’s relative mold burden compared to thousands of homes nationwide.
- ERMI Value < -4: Low moldiness
- ERMI Value -4 to 5: Moderate moldiness
- ERMI Value > 5: High moldiness
ERMI testing is especially valuable for home assessments, legal investigations, and post-remediation documentation.
